class=\"column2-unit-left\">\n<h1 class=\"side\"><a id=\"cable\" name=\"cable\"><\/a>Cable or Cable Laid Rope<\/h1>\n<p>Three plain or hawser laid ropes which are righthanded, laid up together lefthanded, making a nine-strand rope.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"side\"><a id=\"cablelength\" name=\"cablelength\"><\/a>Cable Length<\/h1>\n<p>As a unit of measurement, 100 fathoms. As a length of actual cable, usually 120 fathoms.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"side\"><a id=\"carrickbend\" name=\"carrickbend\"><\/a>Carrick Bend<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"right aligncenter\" title=\"Carrick Bend\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scoutingresources.org.uk\/img\/knots_carrickbend_001.jpg\" alt=\"Carrick Bend\" width=\"200\" height=\"117\" \/>An excellent knot, probably the nearest to the perfect bend. It is symmetrical, easy to tie, will not slip nor ham, is very strong and is easily untied. Its particular use is as a bend for hawsers and cables. It can be used in two forms, drawn up or open and seized and it should always be tied so that the two ends are diagonally opposite.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"side\"><a id=\"catspaw\" name=\"catspaw\"><\/a>Cat's Paw<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Cat's Paw\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scoutingresources.org.uk\/img\/knots_catspaw_001.jpg\" alt=\"Cat's Paw\" width=\"61\" height=\"135\" \/>The most suitable Hook Hitch for slings and probably the best. It cannot jam and spills immediately when taken from the hook. It is particularly suitable for heavy lifts.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1><a id=\"clovehitch\" name=\"clovehitch\"><\/a>Clove Hitch<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"right aligncenter\" title=\"Clove Hitch\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scoutingresources.org.uk\/img\/knots_clovehitch_001.jpg\" alt=\"Clove Hitch\" width=\"200\" height=\"110\" \/>The nearest there is to a general utility hitch. It is easy to tie in a number of different ways and to untie. It has a wide variety of uses but care should be taken not to misuse it: it is so easy to use it when a more suitable hitch (e.g. a Rolling Hitch etc.) would serve better.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column2-unit-right\">\n<h1 class=\"side\">Constrictor Knot<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Constrictor Knot\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scoutingresources.org.uk\/img\/knots_constrictor_001.jpg\" alt=\"Constrictor Knot\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/>The best and most secure of all binder knots. Provided that it is tied on a convex surface it cannot slip and grips like a boa-constrictor, hence its name given it by Ashley who discovered it. It is, however, often very difficult, and sometimes impossible, to untie it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\">These images have been released into the public domain by their author,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/User:LadyofHats\">LadyofHats<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"side\">Cordage<\/h1>\n<p><strong>Definition<\/strong>: The general term for all twisted or laid-up rope, irrespective of size or material.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>Crabbers Eye Knot<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"right aligncenter\" title=\"Crabbers Eye Knot\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scoutingresources.org.uk\/img\/knots_crabberseyeknot_001.jpg\" alt=\"Crabbers Eye Knot\" width=\"123\" height=\"134\" \/>Also called the Crossed Running Knot. When tied loosely, the standing part can be pulled and the knot slid to the required position: a pull on the end then locks it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>Cringle<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Cringle\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scoutingresources.org.uk\/img\/knots_cringle_001.jpg\" alt=\"Cringle\" width=\"136\" height=\"107\" \/>A knot closely allied to splicing in which a single strand is worked into another rope, such as the bolt rope of a sail, to provide a loop, usually to retain a thimble.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>Crown<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"right aligncenter\" title=\"Crown\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scoutingresources.org.uk\/img\/knots_crown_001.jpg\" alt=\"Crown\" width=\"175\" height=\"179\" \/>A knot that is tied in the end of a rope with the unlaid strands. It is seldom, if ever, used on its own but as a constituent part of a multiple knot, e.g. a Wall and Crown, etc. It is also used to commence a Back Splice. The Crown Knot is the exact opposite of the Wall Knot.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column2-unit-left\">\n<h1 class=\"side\"><a id=\"diagonallashing\" name=\"diagonallashing\"><\/a>Diagonal Lashing<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"right aligncenter\" title=\"Diagonal Lashing\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scoutingresources.org.uk\/img\/knots_diagonallashing_001.jpg\" alt=\"Diagonal Lashing\" width=\"200\" height=\"191\" \/>A lashing used for two crossing spars when it is neccessary first to draw them together. Commonly used for the centre lashing of the diagonal braces on a Treatle.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1><a id=\"diamondknot\" name=\"diamondknot\"><\/a>Diamond Knot<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Diamond Knot\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scoutingresources.org.uk\/img\/knots_diamondknot_002.jpg\" alt=\"Diamond Knot\" width=\"158\" height=\"200\" \/>Diamond Knot - A knot tied with the unlaid strands of a rope to provide a stopper or a foothold, etc. Also used as a decorative knot, for example, in lanyards. Can be increased in size and improved in appearance by 'doubling'.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"side\"><a id=\"dogshank\" name=\"dogshank\"><\/a>Dogshank<\/h1>\n<p>Another name for the Sheepshank.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column2-unit-right\">\n<h1 class=\"side\"><a id=\"doubleblackwallhitch\" name=\"doubleblackwallhitch\"><\/a>Double Blackwall Hitch<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Double Blackwall Hitch\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scoutingresources.org.uk\/img\/knots_doubleblackwallhitch_.jpg\" alt=\"Double Blackwall Hitch\" width=\"74\" height=\"129\" \/>This has one more turn than the Blackwall Hitch and is sometimes recommended as being more secure. It is doubtful, however, whether this is the case and it would appear that this is an instance where the simpler form of the knot is to be preferred.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"side\"><a id=\"doublematthewalker\" name=\"doublematthewalker\"><\/a>Double Matthew Walker<\/h1>\n<p>See Matthew Walker.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"side\"><a id=\"doublesheetbend\" name=\"doublesheetbend\"><\/a>Double Sheet Bend<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Double Sheet Bend\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scoutingresources.org.uk\/img\/knots_doublesheetbend_001.jpg\" alt=\"Double Sheet Bend\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" \/>The Sheet Bend is never truly safe and secure when one rope is thicker than the other. The Double Sheet Bend is a variation in which an extra turn is taken and, although it is no stronger, it is more secure.
